The core card-sleeve size families
There are too many branded sleeve reference charts on the web to sort them all here. But there are fewer actual card sizes, and sorting them is what actually matters. Across Magic, Pokémon, Settlers, and a hundred other card and tabletop games, the sizes that matter are:
[Standard/Poker]: 63.5 mm × 88 mm. This is the baseline that the bulk of poker-sized trading and custom card sleeves are advertised to fit, but not every game brand measures to this standard. Alongside the close borader 62 × 89 mm, it defines the group The Cardboard Shelf labels as "[Japanese"] or "small." Because of this overlap, and because some European publishers mark their own deck as 63.5 × 88 mm, the difference comes down to the closing millimetre.
[Standard/Trading]: 66 × 91 mm–70 × 92 mm, depending on the sleeve. This is the category CardShellz marks as 67 × 92 mm, pigeonholes under terms like "[French]" or "[Belgian]". Card Fit Lab offers the more generous 66 × 91 mm as a generic standard.
[Mini/Coastal]: 41 × 63 mm–45 × 61 mm, accepting that the American standard falls at the lower end and the European tends to the upper. It's a generic term for sleeved decks, but one that has both country and brand names attached.
The Sankei/GoFish deck measures approximately 29 × 41.5 mm. While not the most mainstream option, this deck is common enough that most sleeve manufacturers offer a Sankei-size variant.
[Tarot]: 70 × 120 mm, depending on the sleeve. Tarots are heavily personal and can be mixed and complemented with jokers, and while that's common it's details that don't prevent a close statewide tarot sleeve from being fit.
Square cards vary a lot across different formats, from Club Dorset to Yu-Gi-Oh, and sizing guides often recommend measuring them. Having a measuring device obviously helps here.
These variations are also why, unfortunately, neither talking about every card type nor counting on universal agreement is possible. Most sources divide cards into three categories:
- Standard playing card decks, as defined by Card Collecting Central, typically measure 63.5 mm × 89 mm, with thickness not exceeding 1.5 mm to meet American specifications.
- Japanese gaming cards deviate from the standard width, classifying playing cards at 59 mm × 89 mm.
- Mini cards are characterized by having at least one edge shorter than 40 mm, though some sources cite variations, such as 41 mm × 41 mm, which may require further verification.
The bigger the joker count, the more complicated the count becomes. Sources like Card Collecting Central define as "odd-sized cards" anything that fits in the slot of the above list but has additional features like a joker. Games knowledge crudely classifies them as "Specials." Before you look for one, you should decide what you need, but your options are much more limited.
Assuming a "standard" truth about sleeves
This is where the card guide becomes less of a definitive guide and more of a gamble: brands publish different rules and conflicting guides, so a brand assumption becomes the thing you can't trust. These differences also matter, because the secondary card sleeve market isn't a unified sales pipeline: each presentation isn't a sale, but a niche vendor production.
Card Fit Lab, for instance, labels the "[Small standard]" deck sleeve as 62 × 89 mm—a size that overlaps substantially with the "Japanese" standard but doesn't quite map to either. KMC focuses instead on the "[perfect fit]" size: its 64 × 89 mm perfect fit sleeve is narrower than Card Fit, blending Taro with Japanese fit. Sleeve fit changes dealing, meaning that sleeved cards might not even fit the box if both are Japanese. Double or triple-joker decks or other odd special-case filenames might not have lists on many sites, and new tarot sizes get curated more conservatively than any other size.
It's a cold dice-runner's game for publishers, vendors and collectors.
Fit, thickness, and what sleeves are for
Part of the confusion stems from the standards that some vendors don't fit, others tweak, and none universally follow. Card sleeves measure thickness by the micron, the difference between a "soft touch" and a "thick" sleeve. A textile source defines a soft touch to be necessary but not sufficient and too soft for rigid decks. "Thick" sleeves are customarily identified as 90+ microns. Card Collecting Central isn't so absolute: the site measures anything thicker than 1.5 mm as "thick."
But in practice, those standards translate a different, more player-focused way. In practice, they're about box capacity. Sleeve your cards with too thick an inner sleeve, and you'll find you can't close the box at all. Those grey-area decks over 1.5 mm thickness are the outliers, as much as they are the prized, well-loved cards. The Cardboard Shelf, in fact, prescribes a prescription: if it's thick, double sleeve only with an 90+ microns, and if the card is extreme over 2 mm, consider wrapping the cards, not boxing them.
Thicker sleeves also mean worse shuffle, of course, though that's less a problem when you're optimizing for visibility than usability.
How to measure a card
If you don't know the size or brand of a card, your first option is the one the Card Collecting site prescribes: measure. Measure the card in length, width, and thickness, and only then go to the sleeves. Taro cards can vary; thicker cards might push you from one sleeve fit to double, i.e. two decks in the same space. Measure with everything on the deck, and gather all your cards in size first.
Then in order, start with the card type you know fits the most and least. Big tarot cards might twist like a double-length joker variation. Japanese sizes, meanwhile, often require a shorter inner than the box would admit. If you have a mixed collection, measure exuberantly.

Odd-sized cards and the special-case varieties
It's not always enough just to guess. Square cards, like tarot, vary so much in shape and size, almost every source prescribes measure before sleeve. A handful of games don't produce a measure table, making it necessary for you to measure them yourself.
A common term, but 'odd size' doesn't clarify: odd-sized cards have irregular shapes, so check each sleeve first to confirm fit.
Does it still fit?
But even if you wrap every deck, the question you might still be asking is whether the box will fit. Fortunately, even with thickness to consider, that problem is often solvable in advance. Measure first. Decide on an optimal double sleeve thickness. Then check the dimensions, which means diving into the board game publisher's specs to confirm the box size. Modern box sizes are extremely standardized. For intricate collections, consider wrapping the cards yourself.
To confirm, again: measure, first. List the sleeves in order, from tightest to most generous. Consider the whole stack, and order from a vendor that publishes box measurements. If the box is ultimately the problem, consider alternatives.
