What Happens to Digital Games When the Shop Closes?

When a digital games storefront shuts down, the first thing to go is the ability to buy new. But this shutdown doesn't see your already-bought library evaporate.

In March 2023, Nintendo ceased purchases in its Nintendo eShop for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Even so, Nintendo said owners could "redownload for the foreseeable future" the games and DLC purchased on those systems, until 8 April 2024. Until then, owners can also receive software updates and, on some titles, continue using online play.

This re-download period offers a clear division between being able to keep a game you bought, but not the ongoing purchasing ability from the store that sold it. It is what happens to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita stores in 2027 as well. Sony also said owners can keep downloading their purchased games after closure.

Re-download rights and the closing date

However long that "foreseeable future" lasts remains unclear from either Nintendo or Sony. Nintendo's Wii U redownload instructions, accessed in 2026, still tell owners the "foreseeable future" will allow them to redownload and play games and DLC bought before the end-of-purchases date. With its March 2024 update, Nintendo added that, as of April 2024, online play on purchased titles for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software had ended.

Sony's 2021 announcement said owners would still be able to re-download and play previously purchased game titles after closure. However, Sony did not specify what "after closure" means, nor set an end date after which games or servers might no longer allow re-downloads.

Offline play versus online services

There is an important distinction between each platform's offline availability and online services. On Nintendo platforms, software updates and redownloading are independent from online play, though the specifics of offline play policies may vary. Sony's 2021 statement which said that owners will "still be able to download and play" titles indicates the preserved right to offline play is separate from online features.

A key example is Nintendo, which ended online features to purchased titles on 3DS and Wii U software in April 2024, but preserved "the ability to download content that has been purchased and software updates for the foreseeable future."

Platform-specific behaviour

The Sony and Nintendo worst-case scenarios do not seem identical. Nintendo has removed certain demos from redownloading after the purchasing period ends, while Sony's 2021 announcement cited the Download List as the title access point after closure.

On PS3 hardware, the Download List is still accessible after a game is purchased for the first time. Sony's announcement does not say redownloading is available across the board.

What buyers can still do

So, what can a buyer do when a storefront shuts down? For Nintendo and Sony, the best advice is to redownload games and DLC now, while the services remain operational. Even after a shutdown, owners should retain local copies of downloaded games, as well as access to previously used software updates through a device's Download List or Redownloadable Software menu.

Common misconceptions after shutdown

There are several misconceptions that storefront closures quickly eliminate buyers' access to games and content. Nintendo still allowed redownloading of titles and redemption codes for major platforms, even after the owners had invested time and effort in unlocking that content in pre-shutdown purchases. Further, Sony confirmed that the closure of its older stores does not prevent users from accessing their previous purchases.

Another risk is assuming that an available game is equivalent to an endlessly playable game. Nintendo's end-of-purchases message specifically claims that online play in games and software for 3DS and Wii U systems, and online communication features like Miitomo or other social features, were terminated on 8 April 2024. So, not every service guaranteed an owner keeps is syncing with a storefront.
